Osaka Weather by Month: Rain, Heat and Crowd Guide

Quick answer

Osaka is most comfortable during April and May for cherry blossoms and mild temperatures, and late October to November for dry air and autumn colours. Avoid August if you are sensitive to heat, as humidity often pushes the perceived temperature above 40°C. June and July receive the highest rainfall, averaging 180mm to 230mm per month.

January

January is the driest month in Osaka. Expect crisp, sunny days with temperatures rarely exceeding 10°C. You will need a heavy wool coat, gloves, and a scarf, especially for the wind tunnels created by the high-rises around Umeda Station. It is a quiet month for tourism, meaning shorter queues at Universal Studios Japan, where a 1-day Studio Pass costs approximately ¥8,600 to ¥10,400 ($58–$70 USD) depending on the date. Hiking trails on Mount Kongo may have light snow, requiring sturdy boots with grip.

February

Temperatures remain low, averaging 6°C throughout the day. This is the best time for visiting indoor attractions like the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan in Minato Ward. If you are walking around Osaka Castle Park, wear thermal base layers (Heattech). Plum blossoms start appearing at the end of the month at Tenmangu Shrine. The air is dry, so stay hydrated and use moisturiser to prevent windburn.

March

March marks the transition to spring. Early March is still winter-like, but by the end of the month, temperatures reach 15°C. The first cherry blossoms (sakura) usually appear around March 25th. Bring a light jacket and layers that can be removed as the sun warms up. This is a popular time for city walking tours through Shinsekai and Dotonbori. Ticket prices for the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo (approx. ¥14,500 / $98 USD) start to rise as domestic travel increases.

April

April is peak season. Daytime temperatures of 20°C are perfect for walking the 2km path along the Okawa River for cherry blossom viewing. Light sweaters or denim jackets are sufficient. Expect heavy crowds at major hubs like Namba Station and lengthy waits for restaurants. Accommodation prices in areas like Chuo Ward can double compared to January. This is the prime month for photography and outdoor picnics (hanami).

May

Early May coincides with Golden Week, a series of Japanese national holidays. Trains and attractions will be at maximum capacity. The weather is warm and pleasant, averaging 25°C. Cotton clothing and comfortable walking shoes are essential. It is an excellent month for hiking the Minoo Park trail (approx. 45 minutes from Umeda via the Hankyu-Minoo Line) to see the waterfall before the summer humidity becomes oppressive.

June

June marks the start of the Tsuyu rainy season. Expect overcast skies and frequent light rain rather than thunderstorms. Humidity rises to 69%, making 28°C feel significantly warmer. Carry a compact umbrella, which can be bought at any 7-Eleven for about ¥600 ($4 USD). This is a good time for indoor shopping at the Shinsaibashi-suji covered arcade, which stretches for 600 metres and protects you from the rain.

July

July is hot and wet. The Tenjin Matsuri, one of Japan’s three major festivals, takes place on July 24-25. You will encounter massive crowds near the Okawa River and Osaka Temmangu. Wear breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics. The combination of 32°C heat and high humidity is physically taxing. Public transport and malls use heavy air conditioning, so carry a light shirt to avoid chills when moving indoors.

August

August is the hottest month. Temperatures often stay above 25°C even at night. This is the peak time for beach trips to Nishikinohama Beach (approx. 45 minutes from Namba on the Nankai Line). Avoid strenuous hiking during the afternoon. Be aware of the typhoon season; check the Japan Meteorological Agency website for warnings. If a typhoon approaches, train services including the JR West lines may be suspended.

September

September remains hot, but the humidity begins to drop towards the end of the month. It is one of the wettest months due to typhoon activity. If you are planning a trip to the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group (UNESCO burial mounds) in Sakai, check the forecast daily. Short-sleeved clothing is still appropriate, but keep a waterproof shell jacket in your daypack for sudden downpours.

October

October is widely considered the best month for city walking. The air is clear and the temperature averages 23°C. It is the best time to visit the open-air Expo '70 Commemorative Park in Suita. You can wear trousers and long-sleeved t-shirts comfortably. Crowd levels are manageable, and there is minimal rainfall, making it ideal for the Midosuji Parade.

November

Autumn foliage (koyo) peaks in late November. The maples at Katsuo-ji Temple and the gingko trees along Midosuji Boulevard turn bright red and yellow. Temperatures drop to 10-18°C. A light coat or trench coat is necessary. This is a high-traffic month for tourism, particularly around scenic spots. Booking accommodation three to four months in advance is recommended for Umeda or Namba areas.

December

December is cold but sunny. The "Festival of the Lights" illuminates Midosuji and Nakanoshima from mid-month. Evening temperatures drop to 5°C, so warm outerwear is essential for night walks. While it is chilly, the lack of rain makes it good for exploring the Kuromon Ichiba Market. Most shops and attractions close from December 29th to January 3rd for the New Year period; check the official site before you go.

Common mistakes

  • Underestimating August heat: The heat index in Osaka is often dangerous. Plan indoor activities between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
  • Forgetting rain gear in June: It will rain at least 50% of the days; waterproof shoes are more useful than a heavy coat.
  • Overdressing for trains: Osaka subways and trains are heavily heated in winter. Wear layers you can easily remove to avoid overheating while standing on the Midosuji Line.
  • Missing the plum blossoms: Many travellers wait for cherry blossoms in April, but the plum blossoms in February and March are just as beautiful and far less crowded.
  • Assuming beach weather in May: While sunny, the water temperature at local beaches like Tannowa is usually too cold for swimming until late June.

Plan your trip

Journey Planner takes these monthly averages and creates a precise itinerary based on your specific travel dates. It monitors real-time weather alerts to suggest indoor alternatives like the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living if rain is forecast. The tool also calculates transport times between districts such as Tennoji and Kita, estimates your daily spend in Yen, and generates a packing list tailored to the humidity and temperature of your arrival week.

Prices, opening hours and transport times in this guide are estimates used for planning and can change with season and operator. Check official sites before you book.
